Leading the way with stay cable technology

Many of the most dramatically beautiful architectural designs and technically excellent feats of engineering have been realized with the use of Swiss BBR stay cables. The BBR Network is one of the world’s leading suppliers and installers and has delivered more than 420 major projects, resulting in a wealth of enduring and magnificent cable-stayed structures around the globe.

BBR stay cable technology can be used for the following applications:

  • Cable-stayed bridges – built in rapidly increasing numbers since 1950 and especially suitable for medium to long-span bridges from 100 to 1,000 m, where technical and economic factors dictate this solution. For smaller bridges, other parameters may be decisive in the choice of a cable-stayed solution – such as reduced depth of deck, construction methodology and aesthetics
  • Arch bridges – where BBR stay cable technology is the solution of choice for the hangers
  • Roofs – of grandstands, stadiums, aircraft hangars and other lightweight wide-span structures are an ideal application. Stay cable technology opens up a whole new range of possibilities for architectural creativity, as well as functional features and considerations. Cable-stayed solutions have been provided for arenas and stadia in Malaysia, Australia, Germany and the United Arab Emirates.
  • Towers – for communication facilities, chimneys and antennas, as well as wind power stations can be stabilized.

Advantages of using stay cables

Cable-stayed structures have a great potential when it comes to meeting the increasing demand for long span structures. Their advantages lie mainly in increased aerodynamic stability, reduced costs for the abutments and faster, easier construction and light overall structures. However, the most important factor in ensuring the durability and performance of a cable-stayed structure is the selection of a technologically advanced and proven stay cable system, such as the HiAm CONA range.

Unrivalled systems on the planet

The BBR HiAm CONA strand stay cable system, BBR HiEx CONA saddle technology for extradosed applications and the BBR HiAm/DINA wire stay system are unrivalled anywhere on the planet. BBR has been at the forefront of development in the field of stay cable technology for over 50 years. We not only invented high fatigue resistant wire stay cables, but we also constructed the world’s first projects to use modern parallel strand stay cables and carbon stay cables.

Project-specific support

The BBR Network can provide a project-specific evaluation – taking structural capacity and the global interaction between cables and the structure into account, as well as erection requirements and the overall economics and availability of the various systems. This includes also support about cable vibration phenomena and our advanced cable damping solution BBR Square Damper. Contact us for more information.
